8 Page Newsletter Assignment Sheet

Here is the Newsletter assignment sheet. In class I reviewed how to setup the layouts and dummies for this assignment. There are a lot of technical aspects to this project. This newsletter should be designed with the intent that it will be run on an offset press, and will have color restrictions that are specific to the signatures. It will be design to print 4 color (cmyk) on one side and up to 2 colors (black & a spot color) on the other side. The pages that will have full color will be the front and back covers, and the inside center pages (4-5 if cover is page 1). The rest of the pages (2,3,6,& 7 are 2-color pages if your cover is page 1) will need to be one or two colors. Remember to use pantone solid uncoated for your spot color if used.

Here is the new eight page newsletter Assignment description:

Abstracts/Specs:

Design a newsletter for a company that is chosen by your instructor. Your newsletter will be designed as an 8 page newsletter with a 4 over 1 or as a 4 over 2 design. This job design will be targeted to print on an Offset press, but final comps for instructor submission will be printed on Laser jet printers.

Prepare  thumbnail sketches that show your masthead, style, front page & center pages. Turn in your best 15 for evaluation. With instructor input, Decide on a layout and recreate your vision.

You may use photos, and or illustrations. For pixel-based images, edit them in Photoshop and convert the images to CMYK, Duotone, or grayscale. Use full 300 dpi resolution. Use of low quality images will be marked down, unless otherwise informed by instructor. Flattened tif files are recommended for file exports from Photoshop, Photoshop EPS files for Duotones, and EPS files are the recommended file format from Illustrator.

Your publication must be at least 8 pages and contain Display Text, as well as body text. This newsletter must use a Nameplate and mailer for the back cover. Bleeds, duotones, and page numbering are optional, but will be graded on correct usage. Your design will be printed on uncoated paper. Use Pantone solid uncoated swatches for a spot color, CMYK,  and Grayscale for your color spaces/modes. Use half inch margins on all 4 sides to allow for page numbers. Your newsletter must not exceed more than 2 colors four inside pages. Use a dummy to determine which pages will be process color and which pages will be spot or one color.

You will be graded on composition and the use of the principles and elements of design related to this project. Avoid problems such as widow and orphans and utilize Small Caps and Superscript where needed. Follow the rules of paragraph formatting and utilize baseline grids. Decide on body type font, size, justification and paragraph style and be sure to use the same format throughout the entire layout. Turn in a printed sample and PDF files for grading. Turn your files in on a CD. You must submit a pdf of the design set in single pages, an 8 page impositioned pdf and a 4 page impositioned pdf. Turn in separations printed on letter (8.5” x 11”) sized paper printed from your 8 pg impositioned pdf file. (Scale to fit the separations to fit on letter sized paper).
